Community Based Rehabilitation

Community Based Rehabilitation (CBR) is an initiative for providing services and opportunities to the visually impaired and persons with multiple disabilities, building on community initiatives and local resources. It seeks to mobilize disabled people and their families to facilitate their widest possible involvement in mainstream rural and urban development.

Through a system that works towards their inclusion in regular schools, mainstream training, employment and other development schemes, disabled people may be better integrated into their respective social environments. This rehabilitative integration not only involves the community in the program, but it also encourages independence among disabled individuals while enhancing their productive potential.

The CBR project aims to provide equal opportunities to disabled people, and promote and protect their fundamental rights with the ultimate aim of integrating them into mainstream society. This includes all categories of disabilities: physical handicaps, visual impairment, hearing impairment, intellectual impairment and those with cerebral palsy and multiple handicaps. These projects have met with considerable success, proving to be effective and economically efficient.

The project intends to work towards providing access to

  • Medical intervention,
  • Social, educational and economic rehabilitation, and
  • Support services for all disabled persons.
